Lichen at Blenheim Palace

A whole host of different types of lichens are found across the facades of Blenheim Palace, but they are under-appreciated, under-valued and hardly noticed by visitors. Further, site managers worry that they are causing damage to the centuries-old stonework. KHI has brought together environmental science and heritage science researchers with educators and built heritage professionals to co-design an innovative testbed project to find out what lichens are present, where and why, as well as to answer fundamental questions about what those lichens are doing, and to provide some inspiring educational material on the wonderful and largely hidden worlds of Blenheim Palace lichens.
